World Tsunami Awareness Day
Designated by the UN in 2015, November 5th draws lessons from the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan, where local evacuation protocols saved thousands of lives. The word tsunami is Japanese — tsu meaning harbour, nami meaning wave. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the deadliest in recorded history, killed 228,000 people across 14 countries and changed global early warning infrastructure permanently.
