World Folklore Day
August 22nd marks the date in 1846 when William Thoms coined the word folklore in a letter to the Athenaeum, replacing the cumbersome popular antiquities. The field studies folk tales, legends, oral traditions, and material culture. Modern folklorists now document memes and internet legends — the tradition continues, just faster.
