June 14th marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system in 1901 — a breakthrough that made safe transfusion possible. About 118 million blood donations are collected worldwide each year, yet 40% of countries still lack sufficient supply. Voluntary unpaid donation remains the gold standard.
