National Waffles Day

The waffle iron was patented in the US in 1869, but the waffle itself dates to medieval Europe where it was cooked between two iron plates over an open fire. Belgium has 450 distinct regional waffle varieties. The American version — served alongside fried chicken — was popularised at the 1964 World's Fair in New York.
