November 3rd marks the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who in 1762 reportedly requested meat placed between two slices of bread so he could eat without leaving the card table. Whether the story is true is disputed. The sandwich is not — 300 million are sold daily in the US alone, generating a $23 billion industry.
