Polar bears depend entirely on Arctic sea ice to hunt seals. Climate change is shrinking that ice at 13% per decade, and the IUCN classifies the species as vulnerable. February 27th falls near the time when polar bear cubs first emerge from maternity dens — the date was chosen by conservationists deliberately.
