National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

The ice cream sandwich was first sold on the streets of New York City in 1899 for one cent. The modern version — vanilla ice cream between two chocolate wafers — became standardised in the 1940s. Good Humor popularised the chocolate-covered variety. August 2nd commemorates a snack that solved a genuinely difficult hot-weather engineering problem.
