National Bird Day

Founded in 2002 by bird advocacy groups, the day highlights threats to the estimated 12,000 birds kept as pets in the US, many traded from the wild. About 3 billion North American birds have disappeared since 1970 — the most dramatic wildlife collapse documented in a short period.
