Liberation of Paris
On August 25th, 1944, Paris was liberated from four years of German occupation after a week of street fighting by the French Resistance and Allied forces. General de Gaulle led a triumphal march down the Champs-Elysees the following day. Simone de Beauvoir described the day as the only moment she had ever believed in miracles.
