Inti Raymi
The Inca Festival of the Sun, held at the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, was the most important ceremony of the Inca Empire. Banned by the Spanish in 1572, it was revived in Cusco, Peru in 1944 and now draws thousands of visitors to the Sacsayhuaman fortress each June 24th for theatrical re-enactment. The sun is still centre stage.
